About

A Visit From St. Nick 2021 Holiday Stamps

Why the stamp was issued:  To commemorate Santa Claus and his role in bringing joy during the holiday season.

About the stamp design:  Stamp pictures Santa on the roof about to go down the chimney with his bag of presents. Original artwork by Brad Woodard.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in The Celebration Room of Santa’s Lodge in Santa Claus, Indiana.

About the A Visit From St. Nick set:  In 2021, the issued a set of four Postage Stamps picturing different scenes from the classic Christmas poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas.” The set was even named after the poem, though shortened slightly to A Visit From St. Nick. The stamps picture St. Nicholas on a roof about to go down a chimney, a fireplace with stockings, St. Nicholas winking, and a view of him flying across the sky in his sleigh.

History the stamp represents:  What would Christmas be without a reading of the classic poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” by Clement Clarke Moore? In 2021, the issued a set of four Postage Stamps picturing scenes from the famous work. Each features an image relating to a specific line of the poem.

One stamp pictures St. Nicholas carefully making his way across the roof of a home. He has a large sack on his back and is about to go down the chimney. In Moore’s poem, the narrator watches St. Nicholas fly his team of reindeer up to the roof before witnessing him come out of the fireplace. Moore was one of the earliest authors to suggest the idea of St. Nicholas going down the chimney to deliver toys. Previous traditions simply had him dropping the toys down the chimney before moving on to the next child’s house.

As new advancements were made in heating homes, chimneys and fireplaces became less common. With this, the tale of St. Nicholas had to evolve as well. For example, when cast iron stoves were popular, it was said he would squeeze through the stove pipe to enter a home. Today, many parents simply leave the back door unlocked on Christmas Eve to allow St. Nicholas easy access. It just goes to show that, no matter what obstacles are in his way, St. Nick will always find a way to deliver his gifts.

i thought this item was lost. i received a notice that it was delivered with a pic of it by the side door.
it was very windy and raining that day. there was no envelope near the door. i assumed it got blown away. not the seller's fault. then i found it tucked into the railing of the house. perhaps a neighbor found it. so all is in order and the stamps are great.
