Why the stamps were issued:  To celebrate some of the most popular backyard games played in the United States.

About the stamp design:  Each of the eight designs pictures original artwork by Mick Wiggins of a different backyard game:  badminton, bocce, cornhole, croquet, flying disc, horseshoes, tetherball, and pick-up baseball.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Great American Stamp Show 2021 in Rosemont, Illinois.

History the stamp represents:  When spending time with friends and family, one of the best ways to have fun is by playing games in the backyard.  In 2021, the issued a set of Postage Stamps picturing some of the most popular games:  horseshoes, bocce, flying disc, croquet, baseball, tetherball, badminton, and cornhole.  Some of these, like horseshoes, are oldies-but-goodies, while others, like cornhole, are newcomers on the scene.

The best part of each of these games is that they can be played by people of all ages.  It’s a fun chance for parents and grandparents to show their children the games of their own childhoods, or for older children to test their skills against adult relatives.  It can even spark an interest in a sport a child never thought they’d be good at before.

With all the technology at our disposal today, it can be easy to stay inside more than we should.  Backyard games are a great way to get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air, whether you’re one or one hundred.  And that fresh air has been scientifically proven to have positive effects on our health.  So, whether you’re a glutton for competition, or simply enjoy watching your family and friends from the sidelines, get out and enjoy some backyard games today!
